Mock Draft 3.0

Share Button

In this updated mock draft, Joel Embiid makes the jump from number three to number one. Embiid’s workout last week impressed scouts and he proved he was healthy. Jabari Parker will stay at number two to the Bucks, because of their need for a sure-thing player that can score. Wiggins drops to third and falls into the 76ers lap, something they would be thrilled about. Some other major jumps include Gary Harris rising above fellow SG Nik Stauskas and Elfrid Payton rising up from the late first to the mid first round.

Joel Embiid’s Workout Video

Share Button

Joel Embiid impressed many with his workouts this week. We haven’t seen much of Embiid since he missed the last leg of his freshman season at Kansas and skipped out on the Draft Combine. He said his back was 100% and it looked to be true during the workout. As you can see in the video, he had no problem elevating and finishing above the rim. My favorite aspect of the video is how he can catch and face the rim at the foul line, then proceed to take one dribble and finish with a slam at the rim. Very impressive stuff from a center. His touch around the rim is also some of the best I have ever seen from a center. The only knock I have watching this video, is that I wish his moves were a bit quicker and more explosive. But that will come with more repetition. Note that he has only been playing basketball for a few years. I fully expect to move Embiid up to number one in my new mock draft coming out this week. Stay tuned.

The Cleveland Cavaliers stole the top pick on Tuesday night with only a 1.7% chance. This is the second year in a row they have won the top pick and the third time in four years. They chose Anthony Bennett last year; in what looks to have been a big miss after his rookie season. In 2011 they picked Kyrie Irving, who has made back to back All-Star Games. They are rumored to like Andrew Wiggins with the top pick, but all options are still open. Below is the rest of the remaining first round picks in Mr. Hoopster’s Mock Draft.

1ClevelandAndrew WigginsKansasSFCleveland looks to replace LeBron with the dynamic Wiggins. The forward has unlimited potential.
2MilwaukeeJabari ParkerDukeSFMilwaukee hasn't had much elite talent in recent years. Parker has the ability to step in right away and be a top producer on their team.
3PhiladelphiaJoel EmbiidKansasCThe 76ers would rather get either Wiggins or Parker, but with them off the board they pick Embiid. If both he and Nerlens Noel get healthy it would be an interesting frontcourt mix.
4OrlandoDante ExumAustraliaGExum and Oladipo would pair up in the backcourt. Exum could become Orlando's playmaker, while Oladipo can be the true energy guy he really is.
5UtahNoah VonlehIndianaPFThe Jazz already have Favors and Kanter, but Vonleh is a big that can stretch the floor and hit the outside jumpshot.
6BostonAaron GordonArizonaPFBoston picks Gordon at #6. He is an athletic freak that has a ton of upside. Rondo will love playing with someone of his caliber.
7LA LakersJulius RandleKentuckyPFRandle drops to the third PF taken. His lack of athleticism and perimeter game compared to other PFs move him down, but still a very good pick. Chances are the Lakers move out of this pick, but Randle is best available.
8SacramentoMarcus SmartOklahoma St.PGIsaiah Thomas has surprised many people with how well he has played despite his size. But the Kings don't believe he is the PG to get them to the next level. Smart has size and strength at the PG position. He can create chaos defensively for a team lacking in that department.
9CharlotteJames YoungKentuckySGThe new Hornets go with a shooter that can space the floor for Al Jefferson and Kemba Walker. Young also has the potential to become an elite guard in the NBA.
10PhiladelphiaZach LaVineUCLAGPhilly wants to stockpile as much talent as possible. After picking Embiid, they go to the guard spot and pick LaVine with enormous potential.
11DenverNik StauskasMichiganSGStauskas provides even more floor spacing for PG Ty Lawson. Stauskas is the best shooter in the draft.
12OrlandoDario SaricCroatiaPFOrlando adds toughness and versatility inside after picking Exum. Saric can do many things such as, rebound, shoot and handle the ball.
13MinnesotaDoug McDermottCreightonFThe Wolves will most likely trade Kevin Love. McDermott can replace some of that scoring and rebounding when it's gone.
14PhoenixRodney HoodDukeSFPhoenix looks to add another scorer in Rodney Hood. The Duke forward can score in multiple different ways for the Suns.
15AtlantaTJ WarrenNC St.SFHawks add more offense with Warren. Could find himself starting for this team at SF over DeMarre Carroll.
16ChicagoGary HarrisMichigan St.SGBulls are always in need of shooting. Harris is the pick here.
17BostonPJ HairstonNorth CarolinaSGCeltics looking for more offense to add around Rondo.
18PhoenixAdreian PayneMichigan St.PFSuns add length and depth to their fairly average front court.
19ChicagoJerami GrantSyracuseSFBulls will love Grant's athleticism.
20TorontoClint CapelaSwitzerlandPFCapela is a work in progress, but could be a good NBA player with his shot blocking and aggressiveness on the glass.
21Oklahoma CityGlenn RobinsonMichiganSFRobinson would give the Thunder some scoring off the bench.
22MemphisKyle AndersonUCLAG/FAnderson is a versatile player that could do many different things for the Grizzlies.
23UtahKJ McDanielsClemsonSFMcDaniels would give the Jazz an incredible wing defender that would offset Gordon Hayward's deficiencies.
24CharlotteCleanthony EarlyWichita St.SFMichael Jordan wants guys who are ready to play now, after taking a step into the playoffs last season. Early is the best pick. He is a senior that will be able to score a little when he gets to the league.
25HoustonTyler EnnisSyracusePGEnnis drops in this draft because most teams are happy with their PGs. The Rockets don't necessarily think Lin or Beverley are "the guy". They look to develop Ennis and hope he becomes a good talent in a few years.
26MiamiShabazz NapierUConnPGThe Heat may lose starting PG Mario Chalmers to free agency. Shabazz is a proven winner that the Heat are looking for.
27PhoenixJusuf NurkicBosniaCNurkic is a skilled young center. He could be a backup plan in case Alex Len never reaches his potential.
28LA ClippersElfrid PaytonUL LafayettePGPayton would be a great backup to Chris Paul in case Collison leaves L.A. Payton has some similarities to Paul on both ends of the floor.
29Oklahoma CityJordan ClarksonMissouriGAfter picking Glenn Robinson, the Thunder go after more scoring. Except this time at the guard position.
30San AntonioVasilje MicicSerbiaPGThe Spurs love their foreign players. Micic has size and great basketball IQ at the point guard position.

Milwaukee Bucks

Below are the odds for the 2014 NBA Draft Lottery. The lottery will take place on May 20th with the Milwaukee Bucks having the best shot at the top pick. This draft lottery is maybe the most anticipated one in the history of the NBA. There have been numerous teams that could be called out for tanking for more ping pong balls in this lottery. It is too early to tell, but this could be one of the deepest drafts in NBA history.
